Our First Week at Our New Location!

Week one on Larkspur Drive has been fantastic! Each and every one of our children is assimilating well and settling in nicely. It seems as though the children are coming together more than ever as we navigate this exciting change, as we’ve seen unprecedented levels of collaboration and cooperation.

Our New Leading Ladies

Without a doubt, the stars of the show around here have been our new chickens. Each morning after the last child arrives, we let them out of their coop and everyone gives them a handful of scratch for breakfast before they roam the yard with us for the duration of the morning. On Monday, Berkeley decided she wanted to make them a delicious treat in our mud kitchen. She added some mealworms, as we’ve learned how much our birds love those crunchy little snacks, and brought her finished creation over for them to try. To everyone’s delight, the hens loved their muddy, crunchy treat, so each of the children worked to perfect their own recipe for the chickens to try:

Shello, There!

Our chickens aren’t the only exciting new creatures at our new space. We’ve also spent some time this week getting to know our young tortoise! He awoke from hibernation just last week and is warming up to his new home quite well.

Cast Your Votes!

As we spent the first few days getting to know our new animal friends, we casually brainstormed a list of names that seemed to fit. When Wednesday rolled around, we spent Together Time collaborating and voting for final name decisions. After practicing writing and counting, we had our names: Balloon, Frenda, Breakfast, and Frenson. Please take a moment to learn a bit about each of our animals on our new “Meet our Animals” page!

An Egg-cellent Snack

Frenda, Balloon, and Breakfast have been laying a lot of eggs! We’ve rigged up a stepladder for the children to peek inside the nesting boxes whenever they think there might be a treat hiding inside from one of our hens. Once or twice a day, a lucky kiddo finds an egg and gets to carry it ever-so-carefully to the kitchen where we keep our stash of eggs.

After gathering quite a few throughout the week, Lukas, Dominic, and Berkeley each chose an egg to cook themselves for our Friday morning snack. Lukas and Berkeley each chose a blue egg from Balloon, and Dominic chose a speckled egg from Breakfast. They got to experience the use of real tools as we so love to do, and cooked each egg just to their preference. Everyone enjoyed it so much and gobbled it up with some strawberries and pineapple. Yum!

Room to Roam

In between getting to know all of our new animals, we’ve been using our time to explore one of our favorite aspects of our new location: the wide open space. Around every corner is a new adventure waiting to be had.

But fret not! When our exploring tires us out, we all find some time for some valuable R&R:

If our first week is an accurate predictor of days to come, we really can’t wait to spend more time here.
